As the number of active COVID-19 cases across Canada (and the world) continue to rise at an alarming rate and access to approved vaccines for every segment of our communities is still many, many months away, it is important for all of us to do our part to reduce the spread of the deadly virus. Masks are the cheapest, easiest and more readily available method for stopping the coronavirus. The more we do as individuals, the more lives we will save and the faster the economy will bounce back. Wearing a mask is simply a no-brainer. Here is why:
- Masks protect the people around you.
The coronavirus is spread from one person to another through water droplets that exit a person’s nose or mouth when they cough, sneeze or simply speak. The contaminated droplets float through the air, landing on people and high-touch surfaces. One study revealed coronavirus contaminated water droplets can travel more than eight feet through the air. Masks catch those droplets and prevent transmission of the disease.
- You may have COVID-19 and not know it.
People can be infected with the coronavirus and not show or experience any symptoms. In fact, research has shown over 40% of total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the USA exhibited zero symptoms. It is also possible to transmit the virus before any symptoms show up. Therefore, it is best to air on the side of caution and wear a mask. While many people will go about their lives unaffected by COVID-19, sadly for some, it can be fatal.
- Masks prevent you from getting sick.
The COVID-19 pandemic will not disappear overnight. Unfortunately, we are going to see more deaths and further negative effects on the economy. Choosing to wear a mask, especially one designed with medical-grade protection requires almost zero effort but will make a huge difference.
